Stave Off Winter Depression with These Effective Workouts

Winter is upon us, and that means colder temperatures and shorter days. However, with the decreased daylight hours comes what is called seasonal, or winter depression. This especially holds true for those who are accustomed to spending a great deal of time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine as they exercise.

This especially holds true for those who are accustomed to spending a great deal of time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine as they exercise. When we experience snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, it can take its toll on the mind, and depression can set in. Suddenly, that person who is used to being active goes into a state of depression, not having an interest in their regular activities, and having a feeling of sadness and tiredness. Keep in mind that there are ways to overcome this! You do not have to fall victim to winter depression when you engage in the following workouts that can do wonders for your fitness and mental health.

Indoor Aerobic Exercise

During the winter months, you can still keep your aerobic routine going by utilizing resources such as workout videos. Exercise routines for people of all fitness levels are available to purchase, or can be downloaded online. It can be great fun, almost like taking a class in the comfort of your own home. Set aside a specific time to complete your workout each day, and hold yourself accountable. Before you know it, you'll be in a routine of turning on whichever video you choose, and increasing your heart rate! This will increase your mood and feeling of well-being, helping to combat the winter depression. Be sure to exercise for at least 30 minutes, three to five times per week in order to fully reap the benefits. You can even do activities such as going up and down the stairs numerous times, jumping rope, or do sets of jumping jacks, all which are great cardiovascular exercises. One of the best things about indoor cardio is that there is so much available that you will never get bored, and you will look forward to your exercise session.

Walk or Run on a Treadmill

Consider investing in a treadmill for those times when outdoor walking or hiking is not an option. Or, see if any friends or family members have one at their home that you can use on a regular basis, preferably three to five times per week or more. By taking the time to get into a regime on the treadmill, you don't have to worry about sunrise and sunset times, as you can go for that walk or run whenever it is convenient for you. You can challenge yourself during the winter months by training at a consistent pace, setting goals, and taking advantage of inclines. Turn on your favorite music and get going!

An Indoor Workout With Kettlebells

When daylight hours are limited, and temperatures are falling, you can get in the exercise you need without leaving the comfort of your own living room. By using kettlebells, you can indulge in the strength training you need to maintain your fitness all while having fun. Many kettlebell workouts are available, so you can choose what you like, and mix it up so that you don't get bored. Strength training and cardio are both addressed in kettlebell workouts, and you will come to look forward to working out. You can do kettlebell swings, squats, lunges, rows, and much more.

Indoor Biking

Indoor biking can be great fun! Using a stationary bike, you can burn a lot of calories during each workout, all while elevating your mood and fitness level. Whether you choose to do it at home, at the gym, or if you decide to take a spin class during the winter months, you'll be pleased with how you feel both physically and mentally after each exercise session. Try speed intervals, or perhaps ladder intervals. During the ladder intervals, you will be pedaling at increasingly high levels for a few minutes at a time. Similar to racing, this workout is challenging and effective and will have you feeling amazing. Set your goals, whether you want to increase speed or strength, and remember to have fun!

Get an Exercise Buddy

No one will hold you accountable for your winter exercise regime quite like a workout buddy! Find someone who is as dedicated to exercising and combating winter depression as you are, and agree on days and times to meet up and get that workout going. Maybe you'd like to meet at the gym four or five times per week and do circuit training. Or, you can have days where you work on specific muscle groups. There are so many things that you can do with an exercise buddy, such as working with a medicine ball to do the following:

  • Lunge to Chest Pass.
  • Lateral Lunge with Throw.
  • Sit-up Pass, and many more.

In addition to using your buddy as an exercise resource, you will also be motivating each other to go even further. If your exercise buddy tells you that he or she doesn't feel like working out that day, give them the push that they need, and they can do the same for you.

Take the Opportunity to Learn Yoga

Yoga, an activity that can be done indoors, is amazing for your mind and body. Commit yourself to a session at least three times per week in order to get the maximum benefits. You can take a class or learn to do the breathing exercises on your own, making this a very fun, effective and convenient workout. Yoga can help increase your flexibility, build strength, and give you better balance, all benefits that help you feel better and virtually eliminate the winter blues.
