5 More Powerful Tips for Training Like a Pro & Living Like an Adventurer

As you train intensely, travel widely, and wander freely seeking your next awesome adventure, here are some ways to make it all even more fruitful and inspiring: Life-hacks to nourish and turbocharge your body and mind. Enjoy!

1. Supercharge Your Diet With Healthy Fats & Oils

When you're on a long trek -- hiking, camping, backpacking, cycling, or climbing -- meals are likely to be a bit ad hoc. Freeze-dried chicken and dumplings, anyone? And when you're exploring a new city, of course you want to sample the local cuisine, even if it's (ahem) less than perfectly healthy.

But your at-home go-to diet can be a harmonious and intelligent one, comprised largely of fresh organic veggies, high-quality protein, whole grains, and fresh fruits. And, as you've probably figured out, eating healthy foods is a very good strategy, in the long and short-term. Food is the body's fuel, so why not go premium?

Along these lines, it's important -- really important --to include healthy fats and oils in your daily diet. Why? Because pretty much every cell of your human body requires healthy oils to function properly. The endocrine system, the brain and the entire nervous system also require healthy oils to function properly.

The trick is getting clear of which fats and oils are the goods ones, and which are best to avoid. We'll begin with the latter: the ones to avoid. The "bad oils" are partially-hydrogenated, chemically altered manmade fats. They are chock-full of toxic "trans-fatty acids" and are appropriately nicknamed the "killer oils." While small amounts are unlikely to actually kill you, large amounts really could -- so do your best to avoid these, along with the foods that likely contain them (e.g. commercially fried foods, and store-bought cookies, crackers, doughnuts, muffins, pies and cakes):

  • vegetable shortening
  • margarine
  • liquid shortening
  • partially hydrogenated vegetable oil
  • artificial coffee creamers

Now for the good guys: The good news is that there are an abundance of fats and oils that nourish and heal the body. Here are some of the best ones. Try to include a few of these in your meals each day -- to supercharge your cells and central nervous system. Whenever possible, go for unrefined, organic, cold-pressed varieties:

  • Coconut oil & flakes -- one of the all-time healthiest foods on the planet
  • Olives & olive oil -- a favorite in Mediterranean countries
  • Sesame oil -- a staple in Chinese, Japanese, Korean cooking
  • Bone broth -- an awesome source of animal fats and other good stuff
  • Almonds and almond oil
  • Walnuts and walnut oil
  • Butter and ghee (clarified butter)
  • Avocados and avocado oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Palm oil

2. Cross-Train With Kaiut Yoga

Yoga is fantastic as a cross-training activity. It improves strength, flexibility, and balance. Though currently it is women more than men who practice yoga regularly, the truth is that yoga benefits men just as much as women. So guys: don't shy away from a yoga class! Learn what the women have already learned: Yoga improves athletic performance. It sets the stage for speedier recovery after intense workouts. It harmonizes body, mind, and spirit. It's great!

There are many different styles of yoga -- so you can explore to find one that feels like the perfect fit. But if you're already super-active in other areas of your life, the best choice may be a restorative or therapeutic yoga class, such as Kaiut Yoga. Francisco Kaiut, the yoga master who developed this form of yoga, is also a certified chiropractor, and has training in cranial sacral therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, and Polarity therapy.

The innovative style of yoga that he created is great for cultivating the overall intelligence of the body, preventing injury, and working through injuries that have already occurred. Over time, a Kaiut yoga practice will create freedom of movement and healthy joints. It is also designed to nourish and calm the nervous system, at a very deep level. In other words, Kaiut Yoga deeply benefits the body and brain -- the physical structure and the nervous system.

To give you a taste of this style of yoga, here are two poses that are used frequently in Kaiut yoga classes:

1. Viparita Karani (legs-up-wall pose) has deeply therapeutic effects. It calms the nervous system, rests and energizes the legs and hips, and helps you to sleep better. Five or ten minutes is all it takes!

2. Sukhasana (Easy Pose) with the feet drawn toward the opposite edge of the mat, so the knees are quite narrow (i.e. hip-distance) is a great hip-opener. Sit upright in this position for a couple of minutes, and then fold forward -- letting your chest round and your head hang -- for another couple of minutes.

3. Cultivate WiFi Intelligence & Be Kind To Your Circadian Rhythms

Like any form of technology, WiFi technology is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it makes possible wireless forms communication that are truly remarkable, and potentially supportive of worldwide community. We now can phone, text, or Skype with someone living on the other side of the planet -- which is awesome!

The downside is the ever-thickening man-made EMF "smog" that these devices generate, and the damaging effects they can have on the human body. The human nervous system depends upon its interface with the earth's electromagnetic field, in order to function properly. And EMF smog disrupts this connection, creating imbalances in our immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. And these imbalances can then manifest as anxiety, fatigue, and a host of other disease conditions.

The good news is that there are some very high-quality EMF protection devices currently on the market. One of the best is EarthCalm's Nova Resonator and Home Protection System. The state-of-the-art technology incorporated into these devices helps the body to reestablish its connection with the earth's electromagnetic field, hence reversing the negative effects of EMF smog. So devices such as these are a very wise investment in your health and wellness. They help to calm and balance the nervous system, strengthen the immune system, and create hormonal balance within the endocrine system -- all of which contribute to sustained health and vitality.

On a related note ... If you tend to be on your phone or a computer into the evening hours, then installing f.lux on all your devices (tablets, phones, laptops, desktop computers, etc.) is the way to be kind to your circadian rhythms. This free app modulates the color of your computer's display to correspond to the time of day -- which keeps your body's circadian rhythms harmonized, which increases your chances of getting a good night's sleep -- and being ready and fully energized for the next day's adventure.

4. Improve Performance via L-Arginine

As Dr. Axe details, supplementing with the amino acid L-Arginine has numerous health and fitness benefits, which include:

  1. Improving your heart health
  2. Decreasing inflammation and reversing the effects of aging
  3. Enhancing athletic performance
  4. Improving immunity, helping to prevent infections, and speeding up healing
  5. Helping to treat erectile dysfunction and infertility
  6. Improving mental capacity
  7. Improving kidney function

Many of the positive effects of L-Arginine derive from its ability to improve blood flow and circulation. In the body, L-Arginine is converted into nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to open wider. The overall effect includes improved immune function, fertility, detoxification, and brain power. It also stimulates the production of growth hormones, supports muscle growth, and increases energy output. For these reasons, L-Arginine is associated with enhanced physical performance, stamina, and strength. All in all, it's a great supplement to add -- to supercharge your body and mind.

5. Free Your Mind

One of the very best scenes in The Matrix is when Morpheus first engages Neo in a cyberspace martial-arts duel, and says to him: "Free your mind!" What makes the scene so excellent is the kernel of truth that it holds: The power of the human mind is immense, and rarely tapped in its entirety.

A meditation practice helps activate the power of the mind, and can also heal the body. The scientifically verified benefits of a regular meditation practice include:

  • Stress relief
  • Relaxation
  • Better sleep
  • Enhanced vitality
  • Increased intelligence & mental clarity
  • Improved powers of concentration
  • Expanded insight and creativity
  • Deepening equanimity & compassion

The time we devote to a meditation practice is time well spent -- and will almost certainly translate into beneficial improvements in one or more aspects of our lives. Of the many forms of meditation, some are radically simple: for instance, simply following your breath: its inhalations and exhalations, in and out -- and coming back whenever your mind wanders. Others can be a bit more complex, for instance using a mantra, or visualization. And in fact, athletes often use visualization techniques to improve their performance. And you, also, can experiment with visualization practice as a tool to enhance performance, and deepen your enjoyment of your favorite activities.
